Description
A silver gelatin photograph of the United States Army Troop Transport Edmund B. Alexander, formerly the German Hamberg America Line transatlantic passenger liner SS Amerika, which was seized during WWI by the U.S.N.and renamed USS America and used as a troop transport during the war, transporting more than 40,000 troops to France until she sunk at her moorings while at Hoboben in 1918. She was raised and refitted and used to transport more than 50,000 U.S. troops home from France. During WWII she was renamed USS Edmund B. Alexander and used to transport troops to England and North Africa, refitted with new boilers and more in 1943. This photo is before the refit as it has a single stack and the refit ship had two, pencil inscription on reverse Aug 15 1943. Condition VG+.
