Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Amlash culture, ca. 1200 to 800 BCE. A hand-built and stone-burnished pottery bowl of surprising size with a petite, stable base, thick walls, and a gently in-folded lip. Protruding from the side wall is a pierced handle, perhaps for suspending it when not in use as a cooking or preparation vessel. Amlash vessels were buried in large megalithic tombs, built by part of the Marlik culture. Despite its proximity to the large Mesopotamian cultures, the geographical barrier of the high Zagros and Elburz Mountains kept it relatively isolated and a very unique ceramic tradition developed there.
