Item Details

Description

After mediocre studies in Paris, he was ordained a priest in 1679. He became chaplain to Queen Maria Theresa of Austria. On her death in 1683, he became chaplain to Louis XIV. In 1698, he obtained the bishopric of FrŽjus, but gave it up to remain at Court and became tutor to Louis XV. In 1726, he overthrew the Duke of Bourbon and seized power. He ruled until his death. Attentive, he disgraced over-ambitious ministers and re-established a balanced budget.
