Hatchard, 1813; and a 19th century guide to the Tower of London, 4to & 8vo (3)*** II: It was the intention of Charles II to re-inter the body of his father at Westminster Abbey, but a search of St. George's Chapel failed to locate the coffin. It was uncovered by workmen in 1812 or 1813, at which point the Prince Regent ordered an examination of the body. This was carried out by Halford, who came in for some professional criticism for his removal of a portion of the fourth cervical vertebra which had been cut through by the executioner's axe.
