Patriot John Hancock Signed Appointment as Governor of Massachusetts
1p, measuring 15.25" x 12.25", Massachusetts, dated September 22, 1788. Signed "John Hancock" as Governor of Massachusetts. The document appoints and discharges "Daniel Frye…Captain of a Company in the first Regiment first Brigade and second Division of the militia of this Commonwealth…" Countersigned by John Henry as Junior Secretary. With a large paper seal. Docketing on verso states that Frye took the oath to execute the discharge of orders on September 27, 1788. The document is accompanied by a list of Members of the Salem Military Society (29 total names), which includes Daniel Frye. The signed document has flattened folds and creasing. Uneven toning throughout, with minor soiling and foxing. Numerous separations and tears which have been repaired with archival tape. Areas of staining and ink bleed through. Large and bold signature measures 4.25" x 1.5". Both the document and the accompanying member list are housed in sealed plastic sleeves that may easily be opened to access documents.
