Description
UNIDENTIFIED ARTIST, QIKIQTAALUK (BAFFIN ISLAND)
Mother with Children, Preparing Meat, late 1950s / early 1960s
stone, 4.25 x 9.25 x 5 in (10.8 x 23.5 x 12.7 cm)
unsigned.
Provenance
Collected by a federal government administrator during his travels in the Eastern and Central Arctic;
by descent in the family.
This tableau, more than a mere depiction of domestic life, centres primarily on the role of the mother, highlighting the pivotal and undisputed role that women hold not just within the family but throughout entire communities. Here, the mother, with a baby nestled in her ample amautiq hood, is the embodiment of nurturing and provision. She is hunched diligently over her task of preparing meat, while another of her young children eagerly consumes the fruits of her labour just in front of her. The dynamic sense of movement in the mother's and this child's actions contrasts strikingly with the stone's solid permanence, illustrating a narrative that captures the transient moments of life in an eternal medium—a poignant homage to the enduring essence of motherhood and the fundamental role of women in the family and community.
