MARKUSI KALINGO (1899-D) IVUJIVIK / SALLUIT (SUGLUK)
Kneeling Woman, mid-late 1950s
stone, 6 x 3.25 x 4 in (15.2 x 8.3 x 10.2 cm)
inscribed with artist's disc number and further inscribed, "E9991 / IVUYVIK".
Provenance
Collected by a federal government administrator during his travels in the Eastern and Central Arctic;
by descent in the family.
At first glance, this would seem to be a 1950s work produced in Salluit. Both the stone and the manner of dress is very similar to what one sees in contemporary Salluit works of the period,however the sculpture is clearly inscribed “Ivujivik”. Ivujivik is located roughly 100 kilometres further east along the coast from Salluit and this work illustrates how the Inuit frequently migrated from one community to another.
