Ware Books, 818 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, contains a diverse array of portraits featuring distinguished personalities from around the world. Many of the photographs are by Mathew Brady, there is one each by Mayall, Mayer & Pierson, and Disderi. Among them are renowned figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Winfield Scott, Jefferson Davis, Napoleon III, Empress Eugénie de Montijo, and Queen Victoria. Also included are notable military leaders, artists, diplomats, and cultural icons, reflecting the broad scope of historical significance encompassed by the collection.

“Tommy” Tateishi Onojiro

Of particular interest is the inclusion of "Tommy," a Japanese interpreter identified as Tateishi Onojiro, he was one of the youngest and most popular members of the 1860 Samurai envoy to America (Japan’s first diplomatic mission). The entourage visited several east coast cites, concluding with a two-week stay in New York where this photograph was made.
