Near East, Iran, Luristan / Marlik, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A striking stone elongated mace head with a hole through the middle. Weapons like these would almost certainly have been entombed in the small rock graves in which their owners were buried; this piece is in the style of those found at Marlik, in modern day Mazandaran Province, the site of a royal cemetery. Although few human remains have been found (probably due to natural processes of decay), those that have been are laid on their side, surrounded by rich grave goods.
