Description

NIKOLAOS GYSIS (Greek, 1842-1901) Study for Artemis initialed 'N.G.' (lower right); inscribed indistinctly (on the reverse) oil on canvas mounted to heavy pressed paperboard 40.0 x 31.5 cm (15 3/4 x 12 3/8 in). unframed Footnotes: Provenance With the artist's family. The collection of Ernst Hoffman, New York (by descent from the previous). A private New York collection (acquired from the previous, 2004). N.B. The present work is a study for Nikolaos Gysis's Portrait of Artemis (1890), which is held at the National Gallery of Athens (no. K289). The painting depicts Gysis's wife, Artemis Nazou, in a dress of lush silk and lace and a fur coat. In this study Gysis is able to capture the nuanced play of light on the fabrics and surfaces just as he does in the finished portrait. This study was likely painted in 1890, the same year that Gysis's daughter, Iphegenie, was born.
