Description
A Rare Teotihuacan Ballcourt Marker / War Standard Greater Mesoamerica, Early Classic Period, c. 300-600 AD Rose pink basalt in four separate, stacking parts. From the art historical and archeological records, we know that these served two or more functions. One is depicted in a painted mural at Teotihuacan where it was used in a ballgame similar to lacrosse with bats and movable markers like this. Another is at Tikal in Guatemala, installed as a war standard or memorial by the Teotihuacan warriors and rulers who conquered and reigned over Tikal in the fourth century AD. Yet another was found in Guerrero, Mexico, where it appears to have been a war memorial.
