Description
Ahuayu Woman’s Ceremonial Mantle, Mid 19th C. Alpaca warp and weft. Sicasica Department of La Paz. Ahuayus of this type were important weavings that were passed through family lineages and used during important rituals. This mantle features an array of traditional symbols of heaven and earth, sun and snake motifs interspersed with a gambit of natural dye stripes. Wide indigo blue stripes at the edge and middle set off this striking textile. A soft, green woven ribete, edging, outlines the textile. Size: 3'2'' x 2'8'' (97 x 81 cm).
