Harriet P. Stofford (1835-1921) Author. Stofford is remembered for her novels, poems and detective stories. Her fiction had very little in common with what was regarded as representative of the New England mind. Her gothic romances were set apart by luxuriant descriptions, and an unconventional handling of female stereotypes of the day. Her writing was ideal, intense in feeling. In her descriptions and fancies, she reveled in sensuous delights and every variety of splendor. 5†x 8†autograph letter signed, two and one-half pages, Newburyport, January 19, 1880, to M. Butterworth. “…Here, at last, is the little serial that I promised you for The Youth’s Companion…I have treated it from a more novel and less hackneyed point of view…I have divided the chapters so as to leave off each one at a point that sustains interest…if I remember correctly it is just such a story as ‘we girls’ used to like, between our eleventh and sixteenth years….â€
