A mechanical scale model of the wood-burning DeWitt Clinton steam engine locomotive and three passenger coaches, comprised primarily of painted wood, tin and brass. The DeWitt Clinton was the first American Passenger Train. It traveled in New York state on the Mohawk and Hudson River Railroad, a line that stretched between Albany and Schenectady, New York. The engine on this model has actual mechanical movement that corresponds with the movement of the wheels. This model was submitted by Otto Manecke and won special recognition in a 1933 DeWitt Clinton Model contest sponsored by Popular Mechanics Magazine. The model is mounted on wooden tracks and base.The original award certificate from Popular Mechanics Magazine, a newspaper article about Otto Manecke and an 1834 newspaper clipping about the DeWitt Clinton, all accompany this model. Model measures 6" H. Base measures 36" L x 6" D. The framed award certificate and newspaper article measure 22 1/4" H x 28 1/4" W overall.
