History: Coffin, born on July 16 of 1823, was strongly opposed to secession and slavery but possessed an ankle injury that prevented direct involvement in the Civil War. Instead, he became a freelance journalist who covered the war effort. His stories and articles displayed such a strong command of the English Language that he was employed by the "Boston Journal" for the duration. Following the war her wrote over a dozen books, including "Drum-Beat of The Nation."
