Description
Pre-Columbian, Central Peru to northern Chile, Ca 1400 CE. Hand-carved wooden drinking vessel of flared cylindrical form, used for enjoying Chicha - fermented corn beer. Extensive incised decorations of figures and geometric, albeit a bit worn from use. Like later examples (post Colonial) this example was hand carved not made on a lathe. Of two figures depicted, one is seated in front of a house with cornstalks to the right, llama just below; the other figure is seated in front of an altar. Then typical pyramid steps and geometric patterns. Of note, rim is decorated with series of cross-hatches. 5-1/8"H x 4-3/4"W top diameter.

PROVENANCE: Ex-private T. Pavnik collection acquired before 1970.
