Description:
Carte-de-Visite of George Sand / Mde. Dudevant (Elliott & Fry, 55 Baker Street, London. Ca. 1870).
French novelist Amantine-Lucile-Aurore Dupin (1804-1876), who wrote under the pseudonym George Sand, is often remembered today as the lover of Frederic Chopin (after her failed marriage to the Marquis de Dudevant and a dozen other romantic liaisons with French literary and political notables). Her tumultuous relationship with Chopin lasted some ten years, until the illness that led to his death in 1849. Sand, a daring cigar-smoking feminist with homely features, outlived her famous lover by another 27 years This picture, taken during the last decade of her life, bears the imprint of British photographers who opened their studio on Sherlockian-beloved Baker Street in 1863.
