James A. Garfield Ornament from His Catafalque
American, late 19th century. A wooden ornament in the shape of the letters J A G for James A. Garfield intertwined and mounted on a velvet covered board. Attached to the reverse is a label marking this as a relic taken from Garfield's catafalque constructed to house his body during his public funeral held in Monument Park (now Public Square) in Cleveland, Ohio on September 26, 1881.
Provenance: Property from the Garfield Robbins Zimmerman House, Hiram, Ohio
