(1898 - 1975) American Army general who held Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, remembered for his reply to a German surrender ultimatum, "Nuts!" Good content war-date T.L.S. as major general commanding on 103rd Infantry letterhead, 1p. 4to., [n.p.], May 20, 1945 to an admirer. In part: "...Being a dog lover myself, and the proud possessor of a German Dachsund puppy...". He then describes a 103rd Div. In part: "...the cactus shoulder insignia truly symbolizes the toughness of the 103d Division, and our beaten German enemy can testify to our thorns...we trained in Louisiana and Texas...drove through the Vosges Mountains...through the Siegfried Line...and then down through Austria and ten miles into Italy where we made our historic link up with the Fifth Army...". Letter has been mounted at margins to a larger album page, as has transmittal envelope. Some offset stains. McAuliffe was given command of the division on Jan. 15 following his valiant "Nuts!" defense of Bastogne.
