Description
VETERAN OF FORT MCHENRY SEEKS A TRANSFER TO THE MARINES
Pair of good content letters from First Lt. James Holmes, 38th U.S. Infantry, Baltimore, each 1p. 4to., Dec. 18, 1814 and Mar. 10, 1815 to the Secretary of the Navy. In part: "...Having a particular wish to be transferred from the 38th Regt. U.S. Infty...to a Lieutenant of Marines should there be any vacancies...I certainly hope my reputation as an officer...will insure the situation...a few weeks previous to the treaty [of Ghent] being ratified, I addressed a letter to you...as there is a probability of the Marine Corps being augmented, I still wish to be considered an applicant...". A few faults include some offsetting and splits to second letter, seal tear to first, still quite good.
