Description
A fine George III mahogany cased twin fusee bracket clock, Charles Howse, London, (fl. 1761-1804)The 7-inch white enamelled circular dial with Roman hours and Arabic minutes, inscribed 'CHAS. HOWSE LONDON', the wire driven movement with verge and crownwheel escapement, the backplate finely engraved with foliate scroll work beneath engraved back-cock with conforming L-shaped brackets, the figured case with brass carry handle and urn finials to the ogee caddy top, over brass bezel, panelled sides and brass ogee bracket feet, 14.5" (37cm) high excluding handle. For a similar clock see Bonhams 17th June 2008, Lot 69. This maker is recorded apprenticed in 1750, member of the Clockmaster's Company 1761-1804, and Master of the same in 1787.
Condition
Dial- Light scuffing around V. Movement- Scratches to (unsigned) blackplate, no additional holes, no alterations evident but not inspected out of case not visible from sides (as panelled not glazed). Case- Handle and finials probably later, minor veneer cracking to mouldings.
