Description
PRINCE LEOPOLD: (1853-1884) Duke of Albany, son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Leopold was diagnosed with haemophilia as a child which led to his death as an adult at the untimely age of 30. Small series of three A.Ls.S., Leopold, nine pages (total), 8vo, Balmoral Castle, 8th June and 24th October 1881 and n.d., each to Mr. Kennard. In the first letter the Prince apologises for not having answered his correspondent's letter earlier regarding 'the good news that Coutts had taken up the debentures' and hoping that 'no time will be lost in commencing the buildings at Old Windsor', in the second letter the Prince states that his fears about not being able to accept an invitation have come true, explaining 'I have to go abroad about the 11th on family business of importance. But please don't tell anybody of this as I do not wish anything to be known about my journey abroad' and further suggesting alternative dates for a meeting before he goes to the Isle of Wight for Christmas, and in the third letter the Prince asks Kennard if he will meet him at the Marlborough Club before going to the Beefsteak together. Together with Robert Hawthorn Collins (1841-1908) Private Tutor to Prince Leopold, and later Comptroller of his household. A.L.S., R. H. Collins, four pages, 8vo, Claremont, 25th October n.y. (1881), to Mrs. Kennard. Collins states that he has returned from a hurried visit to Balmoral and that the Duke of Albany has written to Mr. Kennard expressing his regret at not being able to attend a ball, further commenting on alternative arrangements before Christmas, or in January, and listing several individuals whom Prince Leopold would like to meet, before concluding by referring to the Prince, 'He seems very well & I think that the journey to Germany (which is a great secret) will result in something important' and Queen Victoria, 'We are safe not to have this date interfered with as I mentioned it to the Queen myself, & she gave her consent'. Letters of Prince Leopold are scarce following his early death. Some light foxing to one letter, otherwise VG, 4 €315-440
