Description
A large Egyptian steatite scarab, Late Period, Dynasty 25-26, c. 760 - 525 BC, the body nicely carved with well-detailed legs, on base, a cartouche, flanked by uraei, containing “men-kheper-re”, which is either an amuletic use of the name of the great pharaoh Thutmose III or the prenomen of one of the several kings of the period. 2.6 x 1.6 cm. Intact, holed lengthwise for suspension, few minor edge chips, remains of glaze and deposits within recesses. Ex Wiltshire, England private collection.
