Item Details
Description
A late eighteenth century silver pedestal cream jug, of fluted helmet shape with reeded rim above stippled and punched borders and foliate panels, two with vacant cartouche, further floral motifs to the fluted corners, moulded loop handle and raised above a conforming shape foot. Remnants of hallmarks only including part of the lion passant and date letter 'P', possibly 1790 (if assumed to be London), also maker's mark 'C ?'. Height including handle measures 6 1/4 inches (16 cm), weight 4.76 ozt (148 grams).
Condition
The jug displays general wear including surface scratching, marks, minor nicks and tarnishing commensurate with the age and use. Denser, heavier scratches to the vacant cartouche, especially one of them. Some loss of detail to the surface decoration. The hallmarks are located along the foot rim. As they appear to have been cut off it is possible that the foot has been ground down? Solder lines are visible around the base of the short stem as it joins the base.
