Description
Pre-columbian Moche Warrior Stirrup Vessel from Peru, ca. 250 - 550 AD. With his alert gaze and fierce facial expression this figure embodies all the qualities of a warrior. Warriors held a special status in Moche society. Warfare was an important ritual activity which achieved practical goals of conquest and defending the land. This warrior is posed ready for action, or perhaps only to serve as a sentry guarding palace entrances or staircases. This piece is beautifully modelled with painted armour, helmet, club and neck protector. He is wearing a white, sleeveless tunic, which is decorated with a dark red swirling pattern that also adorns his cone-shaped helmet, short loincloth with dark red dots, decorated belt and wrist-guards. Great style with wonderful facial expression and detail. A Moche masterpiece.
