Description
A lovely Roman marble head of Commodus depicted as Dionysus, c. 2nd- 3rd Century AD, with delicate features, wearing a fillet and wreath of ivy and berries, his hair styled back into a rectangular coiled plait at the nape of his neck. H: 11 ¾ in (29.8 cm). Well-preserved with a few small chips and nicks, one on the tip of his nose. The surfaces ara quite nice with patches of mineral deposits and the head is nicely mounted on a sturdy square stone base. Ex Austrian collection acquired in the 1930's
