Description
An attractive Roman marble figure of Dionysus, c. 1st- 2nd Century AD, his handsome body nicely framed by the flowing drapery which falls over his left arm and around his hips. The figure is very nicely carved with excellent detail in the drapery and the muscle tones of the body. H: 20 ¼ in (51.3 cm). A beautiful piece with great style, a few areas with minor loss, remains of original iron mounting pin for head, mineral deposits in recesses. The genitals have been removed as was a common practice in later periods due to changes in taste. The piece is nicely mounted on an antique wood base. Ex German collection collected in the late 1800's
