Description
A partially printed 12 x 15” document on vellum dated 1822 granting 170 acres of land in the Virginia Military District of Ohio to Thomas Elliott, signed below in ink by President James Monroe and George Grisham, Commissioner of the General Land Office. Located on part of Military Warrant No. 5729 along Brush Creek. With blind stamped seal in lower left corner. Docketed on reverse with inked sketch map of the parcel. Thomas Elliott (1760-1805) became responsible for the care of his mother and younger brothers and sisters, after the death of his father and brother at the battle of Brandywine. During this period away from the Continental army a group of Tories harassed Elliott’s mother and sisters, and according to family information Thomas killed two of them and then led his family from Virginia to South Carolina. While there Elliott joined the forces of General Francis Marion, the Swamp fox as one of his aide-de-camps, and served until the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown. The land grant was assigned to James Elliott, one of Thomas’s descendants. Ohio Brush Creek is located in Adams County, Ohio.
