Item Details
Description
[Correspondence] Archive of James Alfredson’s correspondence. Spanning more than 40-year period, and covering many topics related to magic and magicians, including performers, publications, magic collection, the journal Magicol (of which Alfredson served as editor for 15 years), conventions, gossip, tricks, and virtually every subject related to conjurers and their craft. Many thousands of letters both typed and holographic make up the archive. In addition, an assortment of paper ephemera complementing the correspondence is included: holiday and business cards, photos, advertising material, broadsides, advertising flyers, and several publications. A group of cassette tapes (“audio letters”), primarily from Peter Warlock are also included, along with Alfredson’s extensive written notes on their contents. All of the material is neatly organized in manila folders and fills seven large cartons (or one four-drawer filing cabinet). Some of the correspondents include Percy Abbott, Will Alma (a quantity), John Booth (a quantity), Dick Buffum, Stuart Cramer, Milbourne Christopher, Bill Dodson, Jose Famadas, Neil Foster, J.B. Findlay, Fleming Book Co., George Jenness, Teral Garrett, Desmond Glass, John Henry Grossman, Walter Graham, Walter Gydesen (a quantity), Micky Hades, Marcus Henvit (a quantity), Ed Heyl, F. William Kuethe, Sid Lorraine, Robert Lund (a quantity), Jay Marshall, Bill Miesel, Al Munroe, Earl Oakes, Rev. Bob Olson, Bob Parrish, Bruce Posgate, David Price, Sid Radner, Jim Reilly, Frederick Rickard (a quantity), Terry Seabrooke, Alton Sharpe, S. H. Sharpe, H. Adrian Smith, Willard Smith, Craige Snader (with Fu Manchu photo set), Stephen Tigner, Thorpe, Taylor, Len Vintus, Ritzko Van Vliet, A. Vander Linden, Peter Warlock, Bob Weill, Roland Weise, Wittus Witt, Margaret Yates, Dr. Morris Young, John Zweers and countless others. In several cases, over 100 letters fill the folders relating to a single correspondent—and in still others, that number is doubled or tripled. In some instances, the files span two or three decades. A fascinating, irreplaceable, and invaluable archive of particular interest to magic historians, researchers, and collectors. The letters offered here contain a seemingly endless amount of “inside,” virtually unknown, and private information not available—and likely never to be published—in any book or magazine.
