Description
Rare Three-Gallon Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Circle Decoration, Richmond, VA origin, first quarter 19th century, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, flared rim, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a large brushed cobalt circle. Additional cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This recently-discovered jar includes desirable open handles, found on some of the earliest stoneware produced in Richmond, modeled after examples from Baltimore and Manhattan. Another influence of potteries located to the North is the brushed circle motif, which adorns both sides of the jar. This design can be found on Manhattan jars dating from the late 18th through early 19th centuries. A jar of probable Manhattan or NJ origin with brushed circle motif is offered in this auction. Excellent, essentially-as made condition with two glazed-over base chips and an in-the-firing contact mark to side.
