Description
Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Tulip Decoration, attributed to John P. Schermerhorn, Richmond, VA, circa 1817-1837, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and flattened rim, decorated on the front and reverse with a boldly-brushed tulip extending from a leafy stem. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Excellent color with strong, thick cobalt. Very nice condition. Tight meandering lines on underside, two of which extend a short distance onto base. These lines do not appear to extend through to the interior. A minor base chip, which appears to be in the firing. A shallow glazed-over rim chip, measuring 1 1/8".
