Mbuya form mask with earrings

Provenance: New York private collection, received as gift from a tribal leader
This Pende mbuya mask was finely carved and painted. The features on the mask include a characteristic Pende depiction of semi-closed eyes. The mask has natural pigment accents for decoration as well as silver-tone metal earrings.
The mask is in good vintage condition with overall wear and surface abrasions. The mask is 10.5" x 7" x 3.5" (length x width x depth).
Pende People
The Pende people live in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly Zaire. The Pende number about a quarter of a million in population. They live primarily as farmers of millet, corn, peanuts and plantains. Known for their dancing and mask carving, Pende masks are typically made of wood with headdresses or beards of raffia fiber. The eyes on Pende masks usually appear closed or downward-looking. The masks commonly favor black, white, red, or ochre coloration. The masks are used to danced with in ceremonies celebrating crop plantings, initiations, circumcisions, and the appeasement of malevolent spirits.
