December 26, 1884-Dated Partly-Printed Document Signed, “Chester A. Arthur” as President, one page, measuring 15.75” x 19.25”, Washington, Very Fine. Countersigned “Robert T. Lincoln” Abraham Lincoln’s son, as Secretary of War. Being a Military Appointment for William S. Davies, promoting him to “First Lieutenant in the Thirteenth Regiment of Infantry”. Embossed dark blue seal is affixed at lower left. Bold and massive 4.5” long signature “Chester A. Arthur” makes this an excellent document for framing.
Born in New York WILLIAM S. DAVIES was a Military History Cadet at the Military Academy, West Point, July 1, 1870, to June 17, 1874 when he was graduated and promoted in the Army to Second Lieut 13th Infantry.
CHESTER A. ARTHUR was the 21st President of the United States (1881–1885). Arthur became President after the Assassination of President James A. Garfield, Arthur struggled to overcome suspicions of his beginnings as a politician from the New York City Republican machine, succeeding at that task by embracing the cause of civil service reform. His advocacy for, and enforcement of, the Pendleton Civil Service Reform Act was the centerpiece of his administration.
