Encased Postage Stamps
Exceptional Five Cents ELLIS McALPIN & CO. Rarity-8
EP-76, HB-112, S-80, Reed-EM05. Five Cents. ELLIS McALPIN & CO. Cincinnati. Choice Extremely Fine.
Rated as Rarity-8 (5 to 10 known) according to Fred Reed. In the Hodder-Bowers reference work entitled, “The Standard Catalogue of Encased Postage Stamps” this very rare denomination shows price valuations that are represented simply by dashes in all grades. We have offered less than a handful in the past, over three and a half decades.
In our previous EAHA Auctions we offered, June 12, 1999, Lot 409, graded Choice Very Fine which sold for $2,415; in August 28, 2004; Lot 679, graded Extremely Fine with a scraped case, which sold for $2,875; and in April 23, 2005, Lot 880, graded Choice Extremely Fine, sold for $3,105. It has now been nearly a decade since we last offered as nice an example.
This current specimen has a beautiful, fresh deep brown Thomas Jefferson stamp that is well centered, just a bit high. The mica is pleasing and crystal clear. The natural golden-chestnut case has clean reverse surfaces and extremely sharp legends. This very rare and highly attractive example is one of the finest known.
