Satsuma ceramic with gold. Japan, Meiji-period (1868-1912)
A very attractive vase with richly decorative painting and generous gold. In the center of the bodhisattva Kannon surrounded by Rakan (successor of Buddha) resp. immortals. One holds up a sutra scroll. Two large three-clawed dragons, one in light relief, the other semi three-dimensional and with a three dimensional head. The bulbous opening displays satsuma relief. Inscription on bottom Dainihon / Choshuzan / Satsuma-kuni / Misho-in / MEIZAN ga (painted by Meizan).
