Description
Pre-columbian Teotihuacan Death mask from Mexico, ca. 400-600 A.D. Among the numerous forms of artistic expression typical of the people of Teotihuacan are funerary masks in various materials. The one shown here is a magnificent example carved from a Quartz diorite. The ears are pierced which would of originally held pendant earrings. The people of Teotihuacan, like other Mesoamerican peoples, placed masks of precious materials over the faces of deceased nobles, who were buried with other precious jewels. Fine example of its kind!
