Description
Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Mexico, ca. 550 - 950 CE. A ceremonial tripod rattle bowl with at least one surviving rattle. Beautiful polychrome painted details in red, black, and tan. The legs once all held rattles indicating it was once used for ceremonial rites. The exterior wall is painted with a serpent-bird, Quetzalcoatl motif and stylized secondary glyphs or abstract design motifs. The interior features a central orb perhaps of celestial significance indicating the sun or moon complimented by black and red stripes painted along the inner wall. 3.63"W x 9.25"H (9.21 W x 23.50 H cm)
