Description
Pre-Columbian, Guanacaste Costa Rica / Nicaragua, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A hand painted pottery pedestal vessel supported by tripod rattle feet showing distinct Mayan influence. The body of the vessel is hand painted with a register of stylized visages, two in profile and two frontal with a net motif. The zoomorphic rattle legs are adorned with lively bovine faces. Such vessels were traditionally placed upon an individual's head, held by the rattle legs and "danced" in order to produce percussive sounds during ceremonial rituals. A gorgeous example! Size: 7.75" W x 4.5" H (19.7 cm x 11.4 cm).
