Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero region, Mezcala, ca 500-200 BCE. String-cut and carved miniature standing figures, one from a white calcite stone, the other from an amber-hued stone. Both show characteristics of Mezcala Type-M6 - a generally broad, flat face, sloping cheek planes that meet in the center to form a vertical ridge suggesting a nose, a flat temporal-parietal lobe, and forearms indicated by two diagonal grooves slanted upward to the center of the abdomen. Perforation on foreheads of larger example and behind head of smaller example for suspension. The fact that the ancients forecasted a modern minimalist aesthetic never ceases to amaze us! 2.75"W (6.99 W cm)

Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
