Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Guerrero, Mezcala, ca. 400 to 100 BCE. Two lovely hand-carved anthropomorphic stone axe god figures, both comprised of polished light-green stone with dark-hued inclusions. The shorter figure is entirely abstract, with a rounded face with drilled eyes and a thin mouth, a slit-form neck line, and attenuated limbs created using the meticulous string-cut carving technique; it also has a biconically-drilled suspension hole through the top of the head. The taller figure, with darker vertically-streaked inclusions, has abstruse yet more fully-pronounced features including a rotund torso, delineated limbs, and a deep neck line, all formed with the same string-cutting expertise; it is biconically-drilled through the back for suspension. Each figure is finely-crafted, and both are wonderful representations of classic Mezcala stonework! Size of tallest: 2.875" H (7.3 cm).
Provenance: ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, USA, acquired prior to 1970
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
