Atmospheric harbor scene by Kees Maks, an important Dutch representative of avant-garde art; his landscape paintings fetch up to €60,000 at international auctions
Kees Maks was one of these interbellum artists, who developed a neo-classical figurative style that was highly sought-after in Paris. Maks impressed with his broad and partly spackled brushwork used for his depictions of fashionable night life scenes, circus artists, dancing couples and garden parties, which were until then hardly known in Dutch art. The present painting reveals an atmospheric harbor scene. It was painted with pastel tones and captivates through the vivid silhouettes reflected in the water.
The painting is signed lower right ‘CJ Maks’. It is fitted with a gallery label on verso. The canvas is cut along the edges and laid down on fibreboard. The varnish is slightly browned, but the work is still in good overall condition. The board measures 54.6 x 73 cm. The frame is only affected by a few tiny losses of material and measures 67 x 85.5 cm.
