Description
Greece, Athens, Kerch Style, ca. 330 BCE. A terracotta handled vessel painted in red figure technique and attributed to the LC Painter Group of late 4th century Athens. Side 'A' depicts a Bacchic scene, with a satyr holding a large aryballos or alabastron while the god Eros, painted in white, flies towards a standing woman. Side 'B' has two youths facing each other in a symposium, with the young man on the right handing a scroll to the man on the left. Black paint has developed a beautiful silvery iridescence. The Kerch Style of Attic Red figure pottery was the last stage of Red-figure pottery produced in Athens, contemporary with the Red-Figure pottery being produced in Southern Italy. It was largely made for export around the Ancient Mediterranean, but largely for Northern Greece and the Black Sea region. Though late in the history of Red-figure pottery, Kerch style pottery still demonstrates great beauty, motion, and detail in the painting. 11-7/8"H x 9-1/2" top diameter.
