Ginseng is a medicinal herb valued in China since ancient times, for its "rejuvernating powers". By the late 19th century, the Chinese demand for the plant had so far outstripped the available natural supply that lucrative cultivation began in the United States, American exports to China nearly doubling over a decade to $1 million annually. The scarce Agriculture Department monograph for interested American farmers, would later be reprinted commercially. Paseador 's promotional booklet for the Chinese-American Ginseng Co. extolled the profitability of exporting the plant ("wanted by 450 million Chinamen") and touted the financial opportunity of US cultivation as the plant in its wild state neared extinction ("along with the Indian and the buffalo").
