Description
A Zapotec face fragment from Pre-Columbian Mexico, circa 600 A.D. – 900 A.D. This example depicts a highly detailed Zapotec face. It is made from reddish-orangeware terracotta, and includes custom display stand, as shown. The bird-like depiction in the headdress is interesting, detailed, and rarely seen. In the book, "Ritual Beauty: Art of the Ancient America", Stuhr suggests that fragments of this type represent the goddess Quetzal. They identify these fragments as such based on the distinctive bird represented in the headdress, showing the sharp curved beak and ringed eyes.(4-1/4" tall by about 3-1/4" wide - 7-1/2" in height with stand.)
