1776 Revolutionary War Massachusetts Document Signed by Fourteen Council Members with Official Embossed Seal
September 19, 1776-Dated American Revolutionary War, Manuscript Document Signed ,by Fourteen Council Members of Massachusetts-Bay Government while in Exile from Boston in Watertown, Fine.
This is an original Manuscript Document, Signed by 14 Council Members, in exile at Watertown, measuring 14.25" x 12" being 1 page, with notation and docket upon the blank reverse. It is granting: "George Leonard, the Office of a Register of Wills, Administrations Inventories... Decrees, Orders, Determinations & other Writings which shall be made or granted by the Judge of Probate of Wills, and for granting Letters of Administration in the County of Bristol..." Signed at bottom, “By Command of the major part of the Council with the advice & consent of Council - John Avery Deputy Secretary.”

Also Signing, along the left side for the Province of Massachusetts-Bay Government, includes: James Bowdoin, (Delegate to the Continental Congress and future Massachusetts Governor); Moses Gill, (future Lieutenant Governor); John Winthrop, (Great Grandson of John Winthrop, one of the Founders and Second Governor of the Massachusetts-Bay Colony); Thomas Cushing, (Delegate to the Continental Congress); Jer. Powell; B. Greenleaf; W. Spooner; John Whetcomb; B. Chadboiun; Elias Taylor; Jabez Frisker; Benjamin Austin and B. White and one or two others that were clipped at the list bottom, which has been patched with a 1” x 3” piece of laid period paper.

The official Embossed paper and wax "Public Seal of our State of the Massachusetts Bay" is fully intact at the upper left. The Seal displays the historic and famous vignette design of Paul Revere’s depiction of a Massachusetts Minutemen with his Sword in his left Hand, while holding a copy of the MAGNA CHARTA in his right hand. Weakened folds and the main vertical fold is reinforced with old paper tape and clear Scotch tape upon the reverse. Some scattered, modest stains with a few foxing spots, yet appears boldly written and fully readable. Reverse side has a statement that on September 20th, 1776, George Leonard took his oath, swearing to uphold all his duties with honesty, faithfully, and impartially... before two Council Members. Impressive, historic and displayable.
