EP-68, HB-69, S-40, Reed BU05. Five Cents. F. BUHL & CO. - Dealers In Hats & Furs DETROIT. Extremely Fine.
Rated as Rarity-8 (5 to 10 known) according to Fred Reed. This example appears similar in quality than the Hodder-Bowers plate specimen, illustrated on page 72 of THE STANDARD CATALOGUE reference. The Thomas Jefferson stamp is just a bit towards the upper left and remains a deep bold rich brown. The mica remains clear and unbroken with just a couple of trivial natural laminations at the outer rim edge. All details are sharp, with no detractions noted. The reverse legends have a natural medium chestnut-brown color with the highpoints boldly pronounced by the slightly deeper tone of the surface. Rare, even as a major Merchant type.
