Cuno von Uechtritz-Steinkirch (1856-1908)

At the age of 21, Cuno von Uechtritz-Steinkirch decided to pursue a career as an artist. With one of his statuettes he had already impressed Wilhelm I. He started his education in the studio of the sculptor Carl Friedrich Echtermeier and later with Ernst Hähnel. The idealistic tendencies of the Dresden School should later influence von Uechtritz-Steinkirch’s work substantially. He concluded his studies at the Vienna Academy under Victor Tilgner and from 1887 onwards worked in Berlin. He soon received commissions from the Emperor, among others for a monument in Berlin’s Siegesallee. One of his first polychrome works was purchased by the National Gallery Berlin in 1889. The artist created primarily monumental works for the public sphere, but also conceived smaller, mostly figurative sculptures. (tfa)
