Heroic representation of a Sagittarius in bronze by the prolific artist Victor Seifert, whose sculptures fetch up to €21,500 at international auctions
This bronze of considerable size is a work by the Berlin sculptor Victor Heinrich Seifert. It depicts an athletic archer, dressed only with laced sandals and a narrow body belt. His head is protected by a Roman style helmet. Ready to attack, the upper body is stretched forward and the warrior is pulling back his right arm to draw his bow. The tensed muscles of the vigorous body are rendered with great skill. The face with a confident, heroic gaze, shows distinctive features and also the fingers and toes are modelled in a lifelike and detailed manner. The archer is mounted on a naturalistic plinth. An expressive work which testifies to Seifert’s talent as a sculptor.
The bronze is signed on the side of the plinth ‘Prof.V.Seifert.’. It is in good condition with light signs of age. The bow is missing, a part of the body belt was detached and has been repaired. The height measures 93 cm.
Victor Heinrich Seifert (1870-1953)
The artist Victor Heinrich Seifert was born in Dobling in 1870. He is mostly known for his fountain figures and war memorials, which are cast mainly in bronze. Seifert studied at the Museum of Decorative Arts in Munich and the Academy of Art in Berlin. His teachers were Ernst Herter, Ludwig Manzel and Peter Breuer. Several study trips have taken him to Paris, Italy, Brussels and London, where he spent quite some time before he became a professor in Berlin. (tfa)
