Item Details
Description
Civil War Letter believed to be a period facsimile of the letter written by Abraham Lincoln congratulating General William Tecumseh Sherman on the capture of Savannah, with impressed picture of the White House in the upper right hand corner. En verso are notes, possibly pertaining to a speech given by Sherman to his troops. Early on Dec. 21, 1864, the city of Savannah surrendered to Union Troops and Sherman sent a telegram to President Lincoln stating "I beg to present you as a Christmas gift, the city of Savannah with 150 guns and plenty of ammunition and also about 25,000 bales of cotton." This letter makes note of that message in the upper margin and goes on to precisely transcribe Lincoln's response letter of Dec. 26, 1864 (note that neither the text of the letter nor signature is in Abraham Lincoln's handwriting). The letter is housed in an envelope addressed to Captain B. H. Dayton, Verplancks Point, Westchester NY with "US SHIP" stamp; postmarked Philadelphia (date not legible). Letter 8" x 5". B.H. Dayton's brother, Colonel L.M. Dayton, served as Sherman's aide de camp.
Condition
Right edge of envelope is missing, envelope with stains and discloration. Letter is in relatively good condition with light toning and a few additional, likely later words added in pencil.
