Item Details
Description
Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Colima Culture, ca. 100 BCE - 250 CE. Classic Colima ceramic artisans created a vast array of vessel forms, including effigy representations of human figures, sea and land animals, as well as flora, fruits and vegetables. This piece departs from the more well-known tripod vessels, and is quite intriguing for its stylistic form, beautiful, rich red finish, and intriguing iconography. The piece features a procession of shrimp or small sea creatures each with a trio of incised lines on their shells circumambulating the periphery with bean-shaped motifs adorning the shoulder. This vessel was likely used in ceremonial rituals, as pieces imbued with such rich symbolic imagery typically served more than utilitarian purposes. Size:  6"H x 10"W at widest point.

Provenance: Ex-private Ramon Kelly Collection. Mr. Kelly is a prominent artist who hails from Denver, CO.
